Media Literacy and Disinformation

  • "There has never been a more urgent need for an Internet free of false or misleading information than during the coronavirus pandemic”

This year, 2021, eTwinning focuses on two sides of the same coin: Media literacy, on one side, and how to tackle the phenomenon of disinformation and fake news, on the other. It was made clear during 2020, the year of the corona pandemic, that the exposure of citizens to disinformation is a major challenge not only for adults but also for students.

The European Commission’s Media Literacy for All Preparatory Action 2020 describes “media literacy” as an umbrella expression that includes all technical, cognitive, social, civic and creative capacities that allow citizens to access the media, to have a critical understanding of them and to interact with them.

Disinformation” is understood as verifiably false or misleading information that is created, presented and disseminated for economic gain or to intentionally deceive the public, and may cause public harm.

eTwinning has been promoting Media Literacy since its birth in 2005 by focusing on the integration of digital tools in the everyday life of teachers and students. Special emphasis has been given to digital citizenship, with the aim of fostering students’ awareness and responsibility in using digital tools.

Areas covered by eTwinning include: digital literacy, digital and intellectual rights and responsibilities, digital security and data protection, digital law and etiquette, digital accessibility and digital communication.

In 2021, we will promote media literacy and tackle disinformation via many activities: from professional development opportunities to online events and conferences, from communication campaigns and publications to featured articles on the portal.

Join us in this year’s adventure – and discover with us the priceless value of true information and how to detect it.

Online Teaching Platforms That Will Make You Want to Teach Online

8 Online Teaching Platforms That Will Make You Want to Teach Online

The future of learning is in artificial intelligence. Imagine you have a virtual mentor that interacts with you in a completely personalised way. It understands your needs and offers you exactly what you need until you master whatever you want to learn. It is totally engaging, motivating and individualized. Although there are already some intelligent systems that track the mental processes of a learner while solving a problem and diagnose the learner’s understanding of the topic, AI is obviously not mainstream yet. Until it becomes so, let’s see what we have at hand that makes teaching and learning more and more convenient. In this post I will give you a list of some of the most popular online teaching platforms that make learning more accessible and easier than ever.

I must note that online teaching is increasingly becoming an option of income for an increasing number of people worldwide because it has some great advantages over traditional teaching in terms of flexibility in working hours, opportunity to reach more students, easy communication tools and re-usable online materials. I must also say that human interaction and social side of learning are, in my opinion, very critical in online learning, and some of these platforms below seem to highlight that in their philosophy of learning & teaching. Here is a list of online teaching platforms that you may have missed and may want to try today!

www.openlearning.com: You can create your course content and teach it through this easy-to-use platform. Social engagement among learners is highly emphasized and their motto is “Experience online teaching. The Social Way.” You can teach anything from pastry making to quantum physics.

www.helphub.com: This is an online tutoring website. It instantly connects tutors and students over online messaging and tutoring calls. It is also possible to have group tutoring sessions. It looks like a casual way of teaching and learning. Users post their questions and receive an answer from tutors. What makes it interesting is that you see the tutors who are online and start chatting with them instantly.

www.teachable.com: Formerly Fedora, Teachable is a platform where you can create and sell online courses. It helps you create your course materials using different media, customise and brand your course (e.g logo, color, style etc) and launch it. The rest is taken care by the platform which also gives you some data such as learner analytics and course revenue.

www.eliademy.com: Like Udemy, Eliademy serves as an online course marketplace in subjects from languages to technology. It has an LMS-like learning environment with all the features such as tasks and quizzes, discussions, grading and learner analytics.

www.learnworlds.com: What makes this one interesting is that it offers you an interactive video tool, e-book creator and an opportunity of networking for learners. It also makes use of gamification to better motivate them. I personally find it quite powerful in terms of content authoring, marketing options and interactive tools for social learning. Once the course is set up, course owners can also personalise the domain (e.g http://www.didemyesil.com). I would consider this type of a platform for corporate training as well.

www.coursecraft.net: This one is a little bit different than others in the sense that it turns blogs into e-courses. It is almost completely text and image-based. It might be an alternative to traditional online courses for those who consider offering non-academic courses perhaps.

www.thinkific.com: Thinkific is a very easy-to-use online course platform. You can bring all your content together, add quizzes and surveys, issue certificates of completion, track learner progress and integrate third-party tools through Zapier. One of best things about Thinkific is their continual product development. They collect feedback from users and improve the platform adding new features all the time.

www.vedantu.com: Vedantu is an online tutoring website founded in India. It seems to be used mainly in that region but it is potentially a platform where anybody can teach anything through live video conferences with a whiteboard for visual aid. The popular topics are Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English, Hindi, Sanskrit, French, German, Social Studies and Computer Science.

www.bibo.com.ph: This one is solely for teaching English online. It seems quite appealing to those who might consider working from home and earn extra income. It is a Japanese-established online English tutorial service based in the Philippines which aims to connect learners and teachers from different parts of the world.

www.podia.com: Podia is a relatively new platform among others and it looks quite beautiful by design. You can handle your courses, digital downloads, customers, e-mail subscribers, payments and data in one place, which is exactly what an online course creator would need. What makes it a bit different from others is that you can create downloads to either sell or give away as lead magnets. This would help you grow an audience more easily and acquire new customers for your online courses.

Perhaps you have never thought of teaching online before, but I assure you that you will be amazed once you discover the world of online teaching and the opportunities it offers.

Greatest web 2.0 Tools

    • Poster and Different Kinds of Media  Creation

Like Canva, all of these tools allow you to create gorgeous designs without needing to be a professional designer. That is, no Photoshop skills required!

      1. Stencil

Stencil is a graphic design tool that’s focused on marketing, rather than making graphic design accessible. And beyond marketing, Stencil is specifically focused on social media images.

      Go to Stencil

      2. Snappa

Like Canva and DesignBold (next on this list), Snappa is another all-purpose design tool that simplifies graphic design enough to make it accessible to an average person. Quickly create images based on set dimensions or pre-built templates. Then, edit and add effects as needed to create the perfect design.

      Go to Snappa

      3. DesignBold

DesignBold is a tool that’s quite similar to Canva. While you’ll feel right at home in DesignBold’s interface if you’re already familiar with Canva, DesignBold does do a couple things well to differentiate itself.

      Go to DesignBold

      4. Crello

Crello is a new’ish Canva alternative that a few different people shared in the comments. I haven’t used it as much as the others, but it seems to be quite flexible and have a good set of templates.

      Go to Crello

      5. Fotor

Fotor is another tool that offers a surprisingly similar interface to Canva. If you enjoy the Canva interface, you’ll feel right at home in Fotor.

Like the others, you select your dimensions and then build your page from a variety of text and shape elements. Or, you can always start from a pre-made template if blank canvases aren’t your thing.

      Go to Fotor

      6. Piktochart

Piktochart is what Canva would look like if it were exclusively focused on infographics and charts and graphs. It’s definitely a niche use, but if you do find yourself needing to create infographics or reports, then Piktochart is a specialized tool for the job.

Piktochart includes a number of infographic templates to make it easy for you to create an infographic even if you’ve never done it before.

      7. PicMonkey

PicMonkey is more focused on photo editing than full-on graphic design like Canva, DesignBold, and Stencil. While you can add text and vectors, most of the tools are on adjusting things like exposure, colors, and more.

    2- Kahoot!
