Formative Assessment Tools

hat is missing in this poster? Could it be FUN?! :)

The most popular Formative Assessment tool that all students like, regardless of age, is definitely KAHOOT. It is a fun, user friendly, game based learning platform that everyone enjoys in, esp. SEN and struggling students. It also allows in-class quiz and a Kahoot challenge which you can send students as homework with a certain deadline. I have used Kahoot a lot during distance learning and not only as a formative assessment tool but also as a "blind" kahoot. That means I would teach a certain topic using Kahoot's premium version which offers slides. .

Here is one example of my Blind Kahoot.

Here is the same one but as a Kahoot Challenge or Assignement

Some other very useful tools that can help your struggling students achieve better outcomes are

QUIZALIZE

Quizalize is a similar tool to Kahoot but students do tasks on their mobile phones. They do not use their mobile phone as a cliker to answer correct answers like in Kahoot Teaching mode. You can choose time for each question like in Kahoot and usually you can create multiple choice  questions, T/F. ut with certain coding you can even create short answer and even sorting. What I love about this tool is the differentiation.

You can add extra materials and resources (like another Quizalize quiz,PDF, Youtue video, link etc.) for them to revise and study more on the topic if they scored 50% on the quiz, 50-80% or 80%. They indicate to you within the app that they have done studying with extra added differentiated material and are now ready to take another shot of the Quizalize quiz you created.

Here are some 5 easy strategies for differentiaton.

SOCRATIVE

Socrative is a free app, but also has its paid version. It was designed by Amit Maimon. Maimon co-developed Socrative with two other colleagues from MIT. This is an app that lets teachers design or select premade quizzes for students to answer, publicly or anonymously, on personal mobile devices during lectures.

There are 3 types of questions (T/F, mulitple choice and a short answer). You can add images, but not a video, you can print out your test or quiz in PDF. Students can easily access your quiz by simply entering your teacher's room. You just need to launch the certain pre-made quiz. There are both student-paced and teacher-paced mode. YOu cannot add time limit for each question which, but you can set time as you would normally do for your print out test. You can always lock the test after the set time is over.

The results can be downloaded in excell sheet or PDF.

You can add more correct answers as well. I used Socrative with my CP students, because it was easier for them to type, match and selectanswers on their tablets or laptops in a student-paced mode. The system would instantly correct their tests and I could print them out and saved them in my classroom folder y the end of the school year. Students feel less stressful when they don't need to use handwriting. They are very slow and it was very difficult for me to read that. The handwriting would be worse as the day woul progress due to students fatigue.

TESTMOZ

Here is a useful website that describes Testmoz.

I like it very much, but in free version you need to save the link of your created quiz and the password otherwise you won't be able to access it. The best thing I like about the Testmoz is that you can accept students answers and change the points manually after the test is finished.

PLICKERS

For teachers all over the world, Plickers is a revolutionary way to collect instant multiple-choice responses from students, without requiring them to have clickers, computers, or tablets. So, if you don't have a high tech classroom, or WiFi Plickers can help you and your students to do a fun printed out formative assessment.

How does it work?

By using a printed card with a design unique to each student, our iOS and Android apps allow teachers to scan student responses and respond in real-time.

Plickers can turn assessments or check-ins into opportunities for play, engaging students by empowering them to share what they know. As a teacher, you can use student results to address misconceptions, tailor instruction, and inform long-term planning.

MICROSOFT and GOOGLE FORMS

Few years ago Google Forms added a possibility of a quiz into their forms. This meant you could turn any of your Google Forms into a quiz by adding points for any type of your question. The same thing you can do with Microsoft Forms.

What I love about these tools is that you can collect students materials, document, pdfs, ppts via Google Form. It saves you time. Students  upload everything into your Google or Microsoft Forms and the shared or upload materials are stored in one unique folder under the nam eof your MS or Google Form.

For example, in order for me to stop getting too many emails from my students, and getting lost in them, I asked them to share upload a file into the MS Forms. Of course, files can be up to 10 MB or a bit bigger. It depends on your settings.
